KORA SAKODDOBAT

Kora Sakoddobat was born and raised in the Mentawai Islands, in a life deeply connected with nature and the ancestral spirits. Since childhood, he has known traditional tattoos as a life language a marker of identity, protection, and the journey of the soul. The forest environment taught him patience, precision, and respect, values that later shaped the character of his work. As a teenager, Kora studied the motifs and philosophy of Mentawai tattoos from the elders and the sikerei. The name “Sakoddobat” became an identity he always carries with him. Even when he left Mentawai, the tradition remained within him and appeared in every line of tattoo he created.Kora’s work began to gain recognition in various countries. Clients felt that his tattoos were not just designs, but small rituals that carried stories, prayers, and the soul of the forest. In the eyes of the world, he became a bridge between ancient tradition and modern art, introducing the Mentawai belief that every tattoo is a journey and the body is the map of life. He sees himself not only as an artist, but as a guardian of Mentawai meaning and philosophy. In every drop of ink, he always returns to his origin: the forest, the sun, and the ancestors who guide his steps.

Kora's Journey

Kora in Europe

Kora's journey has also taken him across Europe, where travel became part of his cultural path and a way to share the living heritage of Mentawai with the world. Through his time in different countries, he has carried not only his tools but also the stories, values, and spiritual meaning behind traditional hand-tapping tattoo. By participating in several tattoo conventions in Italy and France and meeting artists, collectors, and communities from many cultures, Kora has continued to build connections that honor the roots of Mentawai tattooing while helping preserve its original spirit for future generations. For him, every journey is an opportunity to educate, exchange, and keep the tradition alive beyond the islands. Kora is primarily based in Bali, but he may be present in Italy about once a year, those who cannot travel to meet him are warmly encouraged to get in touch to reserve a future spot during his time in Europe.

History & Origins

The Mentawai tattoo tradition, known as “titi”, is believed to be one of the oldest tattoo practices in the world. Its traces existed long before outside influences reached the islands, passed down through generations by the ancestors and preserved by the traditional leaders and healers known as sikerei. In the past, tattoos were created as social identity, a marker of maturity, and a symbol of the deep connection between humans and nature. Each motif, from lines and curves to patterns inspired by flora and fauna, represented a person's role in the tribe, family status, and spiritual protection. Historically, the tattooing process was carried out through special rituals that united customary values, prayers, and respect for guardian spirits. The authenticity of the techniques, the philosophy, and the meanings behind each stroke make Mentawai tattoos more than just body art. They are living records that document the relationship between the Mentawai people, nature, their ancestors, and their identity. Preserving this tradition means safeguarding a unique, rare, and highly valuable cultural heritage that the world is increasingly recognizing and appreciating.

Design & Research

Each design is created through careful research on traditional Mentawai patterns, including symbols related to identity, nature, and the journey of life.
